Area History Books STORIES OF PAINT CREEK How generations of rough and ready neighbors never quite tamed the land or each other. This collection of stories was written by Francis Gannon. Francis was a great teller of stories, a skill he learnt from his Irish father, Pappy. Born in 1913 he lived his entire life on the family farm in Cadott, WI except for a few years as a child in Cloquet, MN. His grandparents came from Ireland in the 1860's settling in the Melville Irish Settlement area of Chippewa County in Wisconsin. He collected stories from the Settlement and larger Cadott area. While he only had an 8th grade education, he understood the need to record the stories. Not only are the stories colorful, but so is the way he recorded them. He kept his large journal in the outhouse and that's where he did his writing. The little building even had a heat lamp for those chilly days. The wonderful stories are about the early settlers, logging, farming and prohibition. There are 108 pages of stories we know you will enjoy. During the next 30 years over 50 families would come from the Mizen Peninsula of County Cork. Ancestors of those early settlers are still living in the "Bluff" area of the Chippewa County. Descendants undertook the job of documenting the history of the Settlement. This 300 plus page book covers general settlement history, interviews, schools, churches, businesses and a short geneology of each family and is loaded with photos. If you have ancestors from this area the book is a must have. It is the recollections of Francis Gannon about deer and wild game hunting. The book begins with deer hunting in the early 1900's. Starting in 1926 until 1977 Francis writes each year where the Old Crows camped, hunted and what they shot. However the real appeal of the book is the stories about the hunters. Through the stories the members of the Old Crows come alive to the reader. The second section of the book covers wild game through the same period of time.
